Written by Sam Keen with his son Gifford, Prodigal Father Wayward Son is the definitive roadmap to reconciliation between fathers and sons. But for justCommunity founder Lee Rush, the Keens’ upcoming appearance here has its roots in a story set in 1999:
In April of 1999, I was not a happy person. I was working as the director of a corporate human resources department. My dream of starting my own non- profit company was slowly slipping away. I was 44 years old, I had a 6-year old daughter, and I had no clear path to making my dream happen.
Around this time, my friend and mentor Sam Keen was leading a trek to Bhutan, a Himalayan country nestled between India and China. Sam is the author of over a dozen books, among them the New York Times bestseller, Fire in the Belly. I decided to accompany him and 15 others to take the trip of a lifetime.
Not surprisingly, this decision changed the trajectory my life. It was on this trip that I decided that no matter what it took, I would take steps to branch out on my own as soon as I got home. On November 1, 1999, I filed incorporation papers for justCommunity, Inc.
As Sam was so instrumental in getting justCommunity started, and since 2015 marks the publication of his latest book, it seemed a perfect time to ask him to help with this year’s fundraising event.
The book chronicles the reconciliation of their relationship through a series of letters written between them. Much of justCommunity’s work has been in the area of youth development, strengthening family and community relationships and rediscovering hope in troubling times. The area that I have always been the most interested in, however, has been restorative justice and reconciliation. Prodigal Father Wayward Son is a powerfully written story attesting to these very issues that justCommunity is founded on. This event on October 3rd is intended for all.-Lee Rush
